What’s This Craze All About?

The entire world of multimedia changed with the advent of the internet. Design and animation technology is rushing forward at breakneck speed and new innovations are being introduced before we can even get used to the last one that sprung up. Businesses that previously used the television and radio as their primary marketing strategy are now shifting large amounts of manpower and money over into internet advertising. All of these advertisements require multimedia knowledge in order to produce and place ads in areas of the internet where they are likely to be viewed by relevant demographics. A brand new multimedia frontier is open before us, many wise men and women are staking their claims earning fortunes off all that the internet has to offer. Video The internet is replete with online videos and major viewing sites like Youtube and Vimeo have been set up in order to let the world watch and comment on what they see. Anyone with a digital video camera can become a movie producer, creating short films that can literally be viewed by millions of people. This means that creative individuals no longer need to have a fortune to launch their multimedia careers. Many filmmakers are being discovered on the internet and propelled to fame by posting their videos on the internet and being scouted by the right people. Music Film is not the only multimedia expression that has been completely revamped by the internet. The music industry is also in the midst of a complete and utter revolution, due to the effects of the internet on the producers and consumers of music. Gone are the days of big studios being the only place you can record high quality tracks. Computer software has become so advanced that a band can literally record an album in their basement, which sounds as though it were produced at Virgin Records. Artists can produce music in a more cost effective manner than ever, but they can also sell their music online and receive the profits directly. This is a drastic change from days gone by, where the big music companies made all of the money while the artist got a mere pittance for their labors. Any band can sell their music to fans directly online, using a simple software program or joining a music collective. While there are still fees associated with most internet music-selling sources, bands are still able to make an unprecedented percentage of the profits from their own work. Publishing Multimedia advances have also changed the face of the publishing industry. Books used to be bought and sold exclusively through storefront vendors. This is not the case today, with many books being published directly online for all to purchase, download, and enjoy. Many of the costs previously associated with publishing a book have been eliminated, as online books do not need to be printed and bound for sale. Authors, much like musicians, are also able to self-publish their work on the internet. This allows fledgling authors to get discovered without an agent and allows known authors to publish their own work and directly receive the profits from their labors, instead of only receiving a fraction of what the publishing company earns.
